Welcome

On an island off the shore of the Three Kingdoms, there is a country known as Wa. It is a peculiar and uncivilized land, populated by superstitious barbarians who tattoo their bodies and have no writing to speak of. It is a place full of unnatural beasts, savage tribal warlords, and frustratingly inconsistent maps. It is a place where one might leave one's village and return to find it utterly unfamiliar--if one is able to return at all, without succumbing to the dangers of the wilderness. Reigning over this strange country is the equally strange Queen Himiko, an enigmatic recluse who few have ever seen and almost never leaves her palace.

Hao Fei is a scholar from the Kingdom of Wei, a devout follower of K'ung-fu-tzu's teachings and quite satisfied to remain in his reasonable world--until a scandal leaves a stain on his family's honor. In order to restore harmony, the Emperor's astrologers have determined that Hao Fei must travel to Wa and not return until he has performed a valuable service for its Queen. With the help of his Wa-born secretary, Li Xun, Hao Fei travels to Wa to fulfill his obligation. But things go horribly awry, and the two are thrown into the middle of a dangerous struggle against powerful, inhuman foes and find themselves inextricably entwined with the fate of the kingdom--and the destiny of a young girl who might hold to the key to its salvation...
